The Philip Moore, Jr. Stone House opens its door to many visitors each year who want a glimpse of home life in one of southern Ohio's few primitive homes remaining intact. "The house was originally a meeting place for itinerant Methodist ministers," explains owner Dr. Louis Chaboudy. "Philip Moore came down the Ohio River on a flat boat from Allentown, PA. He began building the home in 1797. Moore was a husband and father of four, as well as a Revolutionary War veteran. His Pennsylvania heritage shows in the design of the home, which includes 'keystone' construction over windows and doors. These inverted stones are commonly part of a 'Pennsylvania Stone House.'" The house's appearance prompts curious looks from visitors before they even cross the threshold, as the various hues of weathered sandstone rise above the front walkway. The ancient blocks were carved from a ledge of rock only a stone's throw away and still bring administration more than two hundred years after they were laid.
