Porter
Porter Township was the first Township settled in Scioto County. In 1796 Samuel Marshall built a small cabin just above where New Boston is now. The Township was organized in 1814.
Wheelersburg was laid out by Reverend Dan Young and John Young in 1824. Some of the earliest industries were cotton factories, flour mills, woolen mills, fertilizer and drain tile factories. Today the major employers of the Township are services, wholesale/retail trade, manufacturing, and transportation/utilities. The Township has nursing homes, an Assisted Living Complex and Senior Apartments.
Population change increased by 24.1% between 1970 and 1990. This is 19.7% more than the County and 23.6% more than the State for the same time period. Porter Township, which has an approximate population of well over 10,000, also has 73% of its homes occupied by the owners. This shows that Porter Township is a very family-oriented place to live.
